In Feb. and Mar. 2002, RAWA distributed food, stationery, clothing, footwear
and some other items among approximately 1000 girl and boy orphans in the
biggest Kabul orphanage called “Parwarishgah-e-Watan”. This government-run
orphanage has very poor living conditions for these ill-fated children. Each
orphan has horrible stories of their stay in the orphanage under the Taliban
and now the Northern Alliance.
A group of RAWA members spent the first day of Eid in the orphanage and
prepared an Eid party for them and distributed gifts to all of them.
According to the orphans, this was the first time that they celebrated Eid
happily there.
RAWA had planned to provide further aid including sports equipment, TV and VCR sets
and many educational films etc. to the orphanage. But unfortunately, a new
director of the orphanage, who belongs to the Northern Alliance, banned RAWA
from visiting the orphanage and distributing items among the children
because RAWA is anti-NA and they don’t want to work with us! Later we
visited the education minister of the interim government but he was also
unable to do anything as the Northern Alliance has the upper hand in the
government.
Fortunately in October 2002, the director was replaced with another moderate person, thus RAWA was once again permitted to help the orphans, so RAWA provided uniforms for all over 1000 girl and boy orphans. We will continue to help these deprived children.
