PESHAWAR: Afghanistan's Taliban authorities hanged seven men in western Herat on charges of terrorism, according to an independent news agency report on Friday.

The Taliban, who rule roughly 95 per cent of the country, including Herat, arrested the seven men during a raid on a house on the outskirts of Herat, according to News Network International (NNI).

Explosives and a small arsenal of light and heavy weapons were found at the house, the agency reported quoting Taliban sources.

The Taliban said the seven men were all members of the opposition alliance, led by ousted president Burhanuddin Rabbani.

The men were hanged at the airport in Herat on Thursday.

The Taliban espouse a harsh brand of Islamic law that enforces strict rules and punishments, most of them carried out publicly. (AP)
