People in Afghanistan's Ghor province reduced to eating fodder

Islamabad, May 25, IRNA -- People in Afghanistan's central Ghor province have been reduced to eating fodder as the intense drought continues amid lack of food supplies by international agencies.

Ghor is one of those Afghan provinces which are worst affected by the unprecedented drought raging for last several years. Local population is facing serious problems for the last several months due to non-supply of humanitarian aid.

Afghan sources told IRNA here that a large number of people in that province are facing diseases affiliated with malnutrition and many of them have migrated to Herat and other provinces in a bid to escape starvation.

The UN Coordinator's office for Afghanistan recently reported that the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan was very serious and people in many areas of the country have been reduced to eating animal feed.

The United Naitons has warned that one million Afghan people might face the peril of extintion if not provided with timely international humanitarian aid.

Over 10 million people in Afghanistan's Ghor, Samangan, Bamyan, Balkh, Jawzjan, Badghis, Faryab, Parwan, Paktya and Ghazni provinces have badly been affected by the drought, not seen in the country during the past 30 years.
