KABUL, Jan 20 (AFP) - Afghanistan's ruling Taliban militia have publicly executed a murderer in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif before thousands of spectators in a sports stadium, official Radio Shariat said Thursday.
The Islamic Taliban mouthpiece said Mohammad Ali, who had killed Juma Murad, was publicly executed Wednesday by the victim's heir after the approval of the Supreme Taliban leader Mulla Mohammad Omar.
The convict had also committed adultery and robbery, the station said, adding the sentence was handed out by the local military court.
"The heavenly order of execution was administered on a murderer .... before thousands of Mazar-i-Sharif residents in Sina Sports Stadium," it said.
The Taliban have brought most of the country under their ultra-orthodox interpretation of the Islamic Sharia law since they captured Kabul in 1996.
They execute murderers, stone to death married adulterers and publicly chop off the limbs of thieves.
